CARING FOR THE SOUL AND THE FAMILY
-
The very nature of priestly ministry entails giving sacrificially to others from the riches which God has already given us. To do this faithfully and effectively we need constantly to be replenished spiritually, alongside integrating within our busy diaries an underlying commitment to family and friends.
In the morning session, the Revd. Canon Brendan O’Malley (formerly Chaplain to the University of Wales Lampeter) will help us to explore priestly spirituality through the pastor’s rôle as servant, teacher, preacher, healer and celebrant. This will be followed in the afternoon by a presentation by the Venerable Keith Smalldon, Archdeacon of St. Davids, on the challenging task of managing our time creatively whilst ensuring that we cherish our nearest and dearest through an appropriate balance of ministry and family life.

- Through lectures, workshops and worship, this conference will explore what it means to affirm God as the creator of heaven and earth and what we might do practically in the light of this belief. The overall objective of the event is to equip us more faithfully to fulfil the vision of the Fifth Mark of Mission, namely “to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth”.
- MAIN SPEAKERS: Claire Foster-Gilbert, Founder and Chief Executive of The Ethics Academy; Development Director, St. Martin-in-the Fields, Trafalgar Square, London; Robin Morrison, recently retired Church in Wales Provincial Officer for Church and Society. Other speakers will offer workshops on aspects of theological, scientific and practical interest.

- BIBLICAL STUDIES UPDATE
- Keeping abreast of the latest scholarship in theology can help to inform and invigorate our preaching and teaching. This CMD day will offer presentations from two senior academics from the School of Theology, Religious Studies and Islamic Studies at Trinity Saint David, focusing on developments in our understanding of both the Old and New Testaments.
- In the morning session, Professor Martin O’Kane will demonstrate the relevance of the stories of the Old Testament to the complexity of modern life, with particular reference to Genesis and Isaiah, illustrating his lecture with the aid of visual images depicting Biblical scenes found across Wales. Dr. Catrin Williams will then explore use of theories of ‘social memory’ in Gospel studies, a discipline which supports much contemporary scholarship including Richard Bauckham’s highly-acclaimed Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony (Eerdmans, 2006).

- MARRIAGE MATTERS
- The Marriage (Wales) Act 2010 includes significant changes to the procedures surrounding marriage in our churches, not least with the extension of the terms of the ‘qualifying connection’ needed to establish the right to be married in a particular church. Our own Diocesan Registrar, Anthony Jenkins, will help us to explore these changes and to appreciate the impact that they will continue to have on our parishes. Andrea Rowlands, Civil Registration Manager and Superintendent Registrar for Carmarthenshire will also speak, giving the perspective of the local authority on the changes implemented by the Act. As you may be aware, the government is about to engage in a widespread consultation on its proposed legislation on same-sex marriage and clergy are invited to respond, alongside other interested bodies. Hence our day together will include a review of latest developments and a discussion of the implications of these proposals.
- PROGRAMME: 10AM EUCHARIST; 11AM MORNING SESSION; 12.45 LUNCH; 1.45 AFTERNOON SESSION
Suggestions for future training events are always welcomed, both in terms of speakers and topics. If you have a particular proposal please contact the CMD Officer, Ainsley Griffiths and this will be considered as part of the planning process for the 2013 programme.
