Hanmer Community Heritage 2011
Fragile Memories of Hanmer
DVDs and Exhibition
We have DVDs of Heritage Memories, 1889 Fire, Last Thatched Cottage, and Churchyard Tour available. They will be folowed in 2011 by a DVD of Heritage Memories of another group of elderly residents. We also plan for a DVD about Hanmer Pageants.
The Heritage Group has also worked with Wrexham Museum to produce a display of rescue, restoration, and recovery featuring the fire which nearly destroyed Hanmer in 1889. This is in Wrexham Museum from 14th February 2011, and will run for a few months. It features heritage items from church along with the church silver from 1615 and Sir John Hanmer's sword from the Battle of the Boyne.
The people of St Chad's Church Hanmer are actively supporting the Hanmer and District Community Heritage Group formed in November 2008. As members at a church which has seen worship through many centuries we value our heritage.
Our church building has been the centre of a worshipping community through great national events which affected this village. The building itself was damaged in the Wars of the Roses and the Civil War, and then by accidental fire in Victorian times. Wars have troubled this community and left their legacy.
Our building contains in itself a record of change. Our written records extend over centuries. In more recent times we value the records of our community since photography was invented. We welcome the proposals to record audio memories of more recent times and discover, present and store records in as modern a form as possible.
