St David's Llanddewi Church

St David's

St David's Church, Llanddewi is small, simple 13th Century church. In the rural heartland of Gower, it is situated in a farmyard on the Gower Way, a route established for walkers using public footpaths and rights of way. The saddle-back tower is accessed internally through a wide arch from the nave, while another wide arch separates the nave from the chancel. The chancel is slightly off-set to the right, to symbolise the head of the crucified Christ. The church is unusually light and welcoming, having low, plain-glass windows. Books, leaflets and prayer cards are available. In its farmyard setting, this ancient church is said to have been built by Henry de Gower, Bishop of St David's, 1328-1347.

Notable Features

The windows of plain glass allow fine countryside views. The chancel is not in line with the nave but inclined to the south, as a reminder that when Jesus was crucified his head leant to one side. The tower at the west end, with its saddle back roof, houses a single bell, said to be the largest and loudest in Gower. Unusually, a wide arch provides entry to the tower. The oldest memorial slab is dated1737. Registers date from 1718.

Transport

Directions: on the A4118 (south Gower road from Swansea to Port Eynon/Rhossili) pass through the village of Knelston. 300 yards down the hill, where the road takes a sharp left bend, turn off right, on the road sign-posted to Burry Green. 300 yards, opposite the stone-built bungalow, turn left up a narrow lane which leads into a farmyard. The church is now on your right.
