SWINE FLU
The situation worldwide in relation to the spread of influenza, and in particular A/H1N1 (“Swine Flu”), has been of concern to many.
Guidance for Churches
The Government, through the Department for Communities and Local Government, has recently published guidance – written in consultation with representatives of faith communities – on the impact of a possible pandemic on the activities of faith communities, and how they might support wider communities in such an eventuality. This guidance has been circulated to all clergy by the Bishops of the Church in Wales, together with specific advice and prayers for individual and church use during the pandemic. (The Bishops have updated and recirculated their advice to parishes since the Governing Body meeting of 16-17 September 2009).
Each parish has been asked to consider how best to respond to the current situation taking into account the latest advice from Government and their Bishop, and their local context/situation. For example, at the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the Governing Body meeting on 17 September, members were given the option of whether to receive holy communion in one or both kinds; however, anti-bacterial handwash was used by all involved in administering the elements. The Bench of Bishops is keeping the situation under active review, and new guidance will be issued to parishes as required by changing circumstances.
